Eligibility
I’m in an online program. Can I register for GT6000?
No. Unfortunately, GT6000 is only offered to Atlanta campus students.
I’d like to take this course in another semester. Is GT6000 offered in the spring or summer?
GT6000 is currently offered only during the first eight weeks of the fall.
I’m not a first year graduate student. Can I register for GT6000?
GT6000 is a program that we think is most beneficial for first year students who are new to campus and don’t have prior graduate school or workforce experience. However, there are no restrictions on when a student can take GT6000, so the answer to this question is yes. If you aren’t sure if GT6000 is a good fit for you, please contact the Instructor of Record to discuss your situation.
Registration
How do I choose a group/section?
- The first step is to check the meeting times of groups to determine which sections work best for your schedule.
- Next, visit the Student Leaders page and read the bios of the group leaders for the sections that you are considering.
- While looking at the group leader bios, you might look for students who are in a similar program or who have a similar background if you are looking for targeted information and discussions. Alternatively, you might look at group leaders from a different part of campus if you are interested in hearing about other schools on campus.
- Since groups are not aligned by academic programs or research areas, and all groups cover the same material, it is your personal preference and schedule that should guide your decision.
- The last step is to visit OSCAR, and register for the section you want. If the section you want is already filled, we recommend looking at other sections and group leaders who are available. Or, you can register for a waitlist seat.
I’m getting an error when trying to register, or OSCAR doesn’t allow me to register for some reason. What should I do?
- First, check to see if you have any general holds on your registration account.
- To see your registration holds, navigate to the OSCAR portal through Student tab on BuzzPort.
- Go to Registration, then select Registration Status.
- If you have any holds or other issues preventing you from registering, information about the hold and who to contact to resolve the hold will display on this page.
- Next, try clearing your browser’s cookies or using a different browser if your account has no holds.
- If your issue persists after these steps, please email the Instructor of Record with the specific details of your issue.
I'm an international student and must register for at least 12 hours to maintain my visa status. Can this one credit hour course count toward those 12 hours?
Yes.
My department requires that I register for 21 credit hours. Can I still register for GT6000?
Absolutely! The requirement to register for 21 credit hours typically exists for students who are a GRA or GTA (since they receive a tuition waiver). Generally, after signing up for your required classes, you register for a number of special problems or thesis credit hours to bring your total enrollment to 21 credits. Simply decrease the number of hours registered for special problems or thesis by one, and add GT6000 to your schedule to keep your total at 21 credit hours.
Is there any additional cost for tuition or program fees to sign up for GT6000?
There are no specific fees associated with GT6000. If you are registered as a full-time student (12 or more credit hours in the fall/spring semester), then there is no additional cost for tuition. If you are not registered as a full-time student (11 or fewer credit hours in the fall/spring semester), please contact the Bursar’s Office for information on how your tuition costs will change. You can also view the tuition and fee costs for the current semester.
Course Logistics
How much time will I spend on this course? What is the workload?
GT6000 is a one credit hour course, which carries a requirement for 16 contact hours plus assignments. You can expect to spend approximately one hour per week reviewing the module content and completing small assignments for module credit in Canvas, and approximately one hour per week attending the class meeting for your group. Additionally, there are five course deliverables, which should take one to three hours each, and you are asked to attend five workshops, typically one hour in duration each.
In total, GT6000 is a time investment of approximately 30 hours in the first eight weeks of the semester. All of the activities are designed to provide guidance, support, development, and/or time for reflection, so we hope you will find this workload a worthy investment that sets a foundation for your time as a graduate student at Georgia Tech.
What should I do if I have to miss one of my section meetings during the semester due to travel, illness, etc.?
Students should make every effort to attend the meetings of their group as they would any other class. In the event that a conflict arises (e.g. a doctor’s appointment, family emergency, etc.) a student may get credit for a missed meeting by requesting a make-up from another Group Leader and attending their group meeting or requesting an excused absence for the week. To make a request, the student must follow the procedure outlined below.
Submit a request through the Absence Request Qualtrics Form, which may be found in Canvas, at least 2 business days prior to your section’s weekly meeting time.
You will receive an email informing you if your request has been accepted or rejected. If rejected, submit a request to a different Group Leader.
If accepted by the make-up Group Leader, attend the meeting and you will receive credit.
Since GT6000 is a pass-fail course, is there a risk of hurting my GPA if I don’t meet the grade requirements?
Nope! While your pass-fail grade will go on your official transcript, pass-fail grades are not used to calculate your GPA. That being said, we believe you will benefit most from the program by participating, so we hope that you will participate fully for the eight weeks of the program.
What if I register for the course and find I am too busy to meet the course requirements to pass?
First and foremost, we ask that you communicate your concerns with your group leader. They may be able to provide support or work with you to lessen the workload associated with GT6000, so you can still participate in the program. If you still feel unable to participate in the course, please contact the Instructor of Record, to set up an appointment to discuss your situation and a possible withdrawal from the class.
