How do I create a strong application?

Suggestions for Creating a Strong Application

In reviewing applications, graduate programs consider a combination of factors, including academic degrees and records, essay prompts, letters of recommendation, test scores (if applicable), and relevant work experience. They also consider the alignment of the applicant’s goals with the graduate program and their academic unit's faculty, as well as the number of openings for the incoming class.

Our graduate programs receive many highly qualified applicants and are therefore unable to offer admission to every qualified applicant. While programs wish they could accommodate a greater number of talented students in their programs, admission continues to be highly competitive.

Some suggestions on what you could do to create a strong application:

  • Strengthen your research or work experience and ensure it aligns with your program's focus
  • Enhance your academic qualifications
  • Retake standardized tests (if required)
  • Obtain stronger letters of recommendation
  • Seek opportunities where you can engage with program faculty and current graduate students (Information Sessions, Virtual Webinars, Campus Visits, and GT Showcase)

Please note that these are suggestions that do not guarantee admission. Due to the volume of applications received, graduate programs are not able to provide individual feedback on admission decisions.
